This is the composter I want https://www.compostumbler.com/StoreFront/product/compact-compostumbler, but it is hefty price, but I found plans on how you can make your own here. I have two big water drums we have not used for probebly 5 years. I think I want to turn one of them into a compost tumbler. I wonder if I could do it! I loved the class last night by the way thanks everyone who had a part in it :-)

I got looking into them a little today as well. I was starting to think that the more money I spend, the better, until I read this http://www.motherearthnews.com/Nature-Community/2003-04-01/Compost-Tumblers.aspx on the website that Shauna recommended last night. The bottom line, after reading that article, was that it doesn't really matter which choice you go with as far as quality of compost and how long it takes to create compost. The ease of use as well as size should be the considering factors. I like the idea of a tumbler best, but this article talks about which ones are easiest to load and unload etc.
ReplyDeleteWonder where we could get cheap barrels? Valerie, You seen any free ones? ;-) Why don't you get on this for next months craft group! LOL j/k!!

ReplyDeleteThere's a how to on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqfmJKby234
ReplyDeleteFunny thing is they guy tells you to save human urine to add to the compost! Giggling! I am SOOOO NOT doing that! HAAAAH! I am sure there are a few other vidz, this was just the first one I saw! Also- I saw those barrels last night, but he said fuel or something had been stored in them. I would guess they are still okay though. I used to know someone local that could get them for not all that much... I wonder who it was??? HAAAH!
Valerie I saw that video :-) I thought the same thing you did about the human urine thing!
ReplyDeletecheck out this tutorial for a compost bin. http://thehappyhousewife.com/diy-compost-bin/
ReplyDeleteI love that one of the items needed is "children who are willing to roll it around the yard every couple of days!" :-)
So do you even need to place in on a rack? could you just roll the barrel around?
ReplyDeleteSo I made one yesterday with my 55 gallon water drum. Right now I just have it where I roll it around on the ground I want to eventually have it on a rack.
